raven was born to a couple of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and surprised absolutely no one when this became their chosen career path. it was practically written in the stars. raised on a S.H.I.E.L.D. base, by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and babysat by S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, there was nothing in their childhood that the superhero agency didn't touch. this allowed raven to view a very specific, perhaps warped, view of the organization that raised them. child of two of their most notorious agents, raven had the eye of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top scientists and leaders, who wanted to test the extent of their powers, poke and prod at the product of two powerful inhumans. their parents, of course, refused to let their child be treated as a lab rat. yes, they had powers, but the same powers as their parents. there was no study to be done, just training. but while their parents did adore them, they were also still active superheroes. this led to days, weeks at a time when raven would be left alone on base, wondering when their parents would return home. in these periods of time, S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to take more liberties to test raven's powers, add more data to their catalogues. while raven disliked these tests and trials, they were completely obedient with them. S.H.I.E.L.D. was good, after all. no harm was ever meant, only the pursuit of knowledge.S.H.I.E.L.D. had never done them wrong.until they were eleven years old. until daisy and lincoln went off on yet another mission, and only their mom returned home. until the words "explosion", "sacrifice", "HIVE" were whispered constantly around the base. no one would tell raven exactly what happened, but raven knew one thing. their dad died for S.H.I.E.L.D. their dad died, trading his life for the world, for humanity, for everything the organization stood for. grief threatened to consume them, and the only way to cope with their deep pain was to throw themselves even further into the mission. already an impressive recruit, raven became the youngest, most competent agent they had ever seen. their dad's sacrifice had to have meant something. if the world was worth losing him over, raven would never stop fighting to protect the world. they had to honor him.raven spent years training, going on missions, honing their powers to near perfection, and even learning the completely human skill of first aid, becoming a doctor (just like their dad had been, of course). aspiring to perfection, to goodness, is the only way raven can keep the pain at bay. the faith they have in S.H.I.E.L.D. quite literally holds their beliefs together. which is why when the legion program was announced, raven knew they had to sign up. while their mother was apprehensive to let raven go (not for a lack of trust, but for an abundance of caution: raven was a bit too similar to their dad. daisy couldn't fathom losing them both), raven decided that they must. though they would never voice this out loud, or even admit it to themselves, raven had outgrown S.H.I.E.L.D. they had for a while now. but they will never outgrow their love for humanity or desire to fix, to save the world. idealistic, for sure. but if raven ever loses faith in humanity, their entire worldview may come crumbling down.
